6 DAYS 5 NIGHTS BACKPACKING KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA AND BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

DAY 1: ARRIVAL & TRAVEL TO BRUNEI
Points of Interest
🚩 Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia)
🚩8-Hour Bus trip to Kota Kinabalu to Burnei
🚩Yayasan Sultan (Brunei)

We arrived early and decided to visit Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal before our 8:00 AM bus. From there, we took a grab car to KK Sentral to ride our pre-booked bus from Kota Kinabalu to Bandar Seri Begawan. The journey would take about 8 hours, with eight immigration stops along the way.

Once we arrived at BSB Terminal in Brunei, we walked over to our hostel, Qing Yun Resthouse Bandar. It’s conveniently within walking distance of several notable spots, a mall, plenty of restaurants, and the bus station. After checking in, we explored the area a bit and had dinner at Yayasan Sultan Mall.

We had just one day to explore Brunei, so we focused on seeing the main city. There was so much more we wanted to check out, but it’ll have to wait until next time.

Other activities we wished to try were the Brunei Water Village Tour and the Proboscis Monkey Encounter Tour. The Brunei Water Village Tour, or Kampong Ayer, includes a  scenic boat ride and cultural visit to one of the world’s largest water villages while the Proboscis Monkey Encounter Tour takes you to the lush wetlands and mangroves of Brunei, where you can observe the unique proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat.
We'll definitely be back!

DAY 3: BRUNEI TO KOTA KINABALU
🚩Kota Kinabalu to Burnei Bus Trip

Returning to Kota Kinabalu was similar to our departure for Brunei. We took the bus from Bandar Seri Begawan back to the KK Sentral, following the same route with the usual immigration stops. Once we arrived in Kota Kinabalu, we check-in to a nearby hostel.

DAY 6: MARI-MARI CULTURAL VILLAGE HALF DAY TOUR

On our last full day, we joined a half-day Village tour we booked through Klook. We visited the Mari-Mari Cultural Village, which showcases the traditional lifestyles of various indigenous groups in Sabah. The village features different traditional houses that represent the culture and heritage of the Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, and other ethnic communities. Each house showed the unique customs and practices of these groups.

TRAVEL TIPS:
A. ACCOMMODATIONS, TOURS AND PRE-TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
↠ ACCOMMODATIONS
Book your hotels through Booking or Klook. These sites offer pay at the hotel or credit card payments. I highly suggest booking hotels near the BSB Terminal in Brunei & Kota Kinabalu Center. The second concern would be the amenities and overall aesthetics of the place. We prefer hotels with air-conditioning, own toilet and bath, WIFI and breakfast included. Pools, gardens and other amenities would be a plus.
↠ TOURS
Most of our tours are booked through Klook.
↠ INTERNET AND COMMUNICATION
We purchased a Sim Card via Klook.
↠ TRANSFERS AND TRANSPORTATION
We mostly used Grab for transportation around Kota Kinabalu since it is cheap and realiable.
Brunei can be expensive, so we opt to stay near the tourist spots, local bus, and walk.
↠ PH TRAVEL TAX 1620PHP
↠ Download applications you need for navigation as well as contacting drivers and hotels.
B. GETTING AROUND
↠ Walking
↠ Grab App
↠ Local Bus

C. WHAT TO EAT
↠ Kota Kinabalu: Roti Cobra, Bah Kuh Teh, Satay, Mee Tuaran
↠ Brunei: Ambuyat, Nasi Katok

D. TIPS
↠ Bring your water bottle.
↠ Book cheap hotels near city centers and ports for accessibility.
↠ Know the places where you want to go and build your itinerary around it. Then cross off places that are too far away (unless you really want to go)
