JUNE 29, 2015 - DAY 6
We took the 7am ferry to Misamis Oriental from Camiguin. It was roughly an hour and a half minutes. From the port, we hired a van to take us to Cagayan De Oro (1 hour travel time) and tour us around the city.
Our first stop was the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village. It is an “ethnic museum.” It showcases the different tribes living in Mindanao: The Bukidnon, Higuanon, Subanon, Umayamnon and Talaandig tribes. They said the eco-tourism village was created to give knowledge of our tribal roots and to take care of them.
As we passed by one of the tribal houses, we came across an Umaynon couple who were making bracelets for the eco-tourism village souvenir shop. We saw that they were wearing their authentic tribal costumes, and ask if we could try it on. Their clothes were colorful and striking. They even taught us their tribal dance and play with their instruments.
We were having fun learning about their culture. We sat down and help them make bracelets for the shop, although we ended up buying it because of lack of accuracy and “beauty.” ;)
As we make the bracelets, we got to ask one of them about their history and stories. They said their family were originally from Bukidnon, their tribe was very small and when a commercial building was to be constructed on their homes, they had to migrate to CDO. It’s such a same that they had to leave their houses— not to mention that those houses were authentic and only few bahay kubo remains untouched and made of indigenous materials.
It was almost lunch time, so we ate in the Higaonon Restocafe.
